Scientific Societies Leveraging Shared Goals to Create IDEA Environments
Diversity-focused committees are essential in the efforts of professional scientific societies to foster a more inclusive membership and workforce in their scientific disciplines of interest. In 2017, the efforts of five of these committees in the life sciences were united to form the Alliance to Catalyze Change for Equity in STEM Success (ACCESS). ACCESS includes representatives from diversity-focused committees of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Society for Cell Biology, the American Society for Pharmaceutical and Experimental Therapeutics, the Endocrine Society, and the Biophysical Society. During this pre-conference event, we will discuss examples of how ACCESS member societies have leveraged their equity-focused shared goals to deepen their understanding of how to better create IDEA environments. This event will include opportunities to interact and brainstorm about ways your society can build on the findings of ACCESS to facilitate IDEA environments.
